At first glance, HeyHi might sound like a quirky dating app. But in the world of education, it’s quickly becoming synonymous with intelligent, scalable and personalized learning. Fresh off winning first place in the “Evaluation and Assessment in the Age of AI” Special Track at the Global EdTech Startup Awards, this Singapore-based startup is proving that thoughtful, human-first AI that is grounded in sound pedagogy can meaningfully reshape learning.

Connecting the Best Minds To Solve Real Problems in Education

Behind HeyHi is a powerful merger of minds: Yueh Mei Liu, a senior education leader with 25+ years of experience in Singapore’s Ministry of Education and curriculum design, and Dr. Glenn Low, a PhD in engineering and serial entrepreneur who pivoted into education after witnessing its systemic inefficiencies.

“I started out teaching while doing my PhD,” Dr. Low recalls. “What began as a side project turned into something much deeper. I saw a real need for tools that could do more than digitising learning. Today, we focus on building tools that empower both learners and educators, supported by smart automation, adaptive assessments, and AI.”

The Power of Smart, Adaptive Assessments

HeyHi's core innovation is its AI-powered assessment platform. In a collaboration with I Can Read (ICR) and Oodles Learning (OL), two leading education brands in Asia, HeyHi delivered on this promise at scale.

ICR, a premium English language provider with over 300,000 students worldwide, and OL, a top-tier Math specialist in Singapore, had a shared challenge: how to consistently assess student performance across multiple centres while maintaining personalization and pedagogical integrity.

Two key needs emerged:

  1. A way to automatically capture and analyse student performance for nuanced insights.

  2. A standardised evaluation system to benchmark students across centres.

Integrated into ICR and OL’s existing LMS, HeyHi’s platform automated grading, generated adaptive worksheets, and delivered real-time analytics, all while mimicking the responsiveness of an in-person classroom.

“Every student’s attempt is auto-marked so learning data is instantly captured and requires no extra work from teachers,” Dr. Low explained. “We saved teachers more than 15,000 hours of work. By removing the burden of repetitive tasks, we enable educators to focus on what truly matters: engaging students and improving learning outcomes.”

Students receive immediate feedback, access to solution videos, and unlimited assessment practice. The platform adjusts question difficulty and content in real time, based on identified learning gaps, creating a uniquely tailored learning experience for each student. In just two weeks, ICR and OL reported thousands of student logins and a spike in engagement across their centers.

Keeping It Human on a Global Stage

Recently, HeyHi won first place at the “Evaluation and Assessment in the Age of AI” Special Track for the Global EdTech Startup Awards. This track, sponsored by Accelerated Minds, was seeking visionary EdTech startups hacking the future of education with AI. The international panel of judges agreed that HeyHi showed incredible potential in this field.

“Participating in the GESAwards was a valuable opportunity to connect with other passionate EdTech innovators around the world. Being recognised as a winner meant a lot, and encouraged us to keep improving and listening to the needs of educators and learners. It reminded us that there’s still a lot of work to do, and a community to learn from along the way.”

For EdTech startups considering the GESAwards, Dr. Low has a message: “It's crucial to focus on the real impact. Show how your product makes learning better, not just how advanced your tech is. Strong pedagogy, measurable benefits in learning outcomes, and educator empowerment are what truly resonate. Let your innovation be human-first."

That human-centric design ethos is reflected even in the company’s name. HeyHi is meant to sound warm and approachable, “just like learning should be,” said Dr. Low. As a bonus, it subtly nods to the AI behind it all.

While it may have started with a handful of passionate educators and engineers, HeyHi is now showing the world how adaptive learning can be truly scalable and growing in schools in Asia and beyond. Using technology in an intentional way, with pedagogical integrity, and deep empathy for both learners and teachers, is for them, the key to success and true impact.
